of women from many husbands (a collection of articles, Blacks Pozza Editore) gives us the opportunity to meet a costume for us curious, and still practiced in Tibet, as polyandry.
Tucci wrote in 1936:
"In almost all husbands have more than one, because in Tibet still maintain the custom of polyandry. A young woman marries not just her boyfriend, but along with him, all of his brothers and as if this were not enough, it can take a kind of assistant, a husband legally or illegally, being chosen on a whim or for more valid reasons to end soon become the most influential people of this strange scheme family ... But with all this great harmony reigns in these families who do not know the worm of jealousy or rage of passion. Husbands have their turn and take turns with their resigned submission to the will of the woman who actually enjoys a great authority ... "
Even Marco Polo in Million was dedicated to the customs in Tibet double-rich pages curious ideas and colorful descriptions:
"You should know that a local man would never take a wife a virgin. They say a woman who has had several men are worthless and is not beloved by the gods because if it were their loved one would be sought and desired by men. So you wear it this way: when they are en route to that country men and strangers have pitched their tents, go to the tents of the old country with their daughters, to more or less numerous groups of ten, twenty, thirty, forty girls and offer travelers because make their pleasure lying with them. The young people like best are accepted, and other mourners return home. The men have all the time keeping the girls they like, but always in the same place. When they have had enough and want to leave, should give their girl a jewel or a memory that she can show as proof of having had a lover. Thus a person who is in the neck more than twenty of jewels and memories can show to have had at least twenty lovers. And those who have more memories and that can show they have been with many men are considered the best and are required to marry because, to common wisdom, are the prettiest. And when they married, if their husbands take care because they consider a great sin to touch the other woman and from this they look very pity. "
towards the south and coming to the province of Gaindu, Marco Polo noted that other curious behavior:
"Men do not get offended if a stranger or another man is the lover of their wives, daughters and sisters or other women of the house. I am indeed grateful and thankful to them because they believe that such their God and their idols, they are happy and reward them with abundant goods ... When a man sees a stranger in this country going to stay in her house, immediately leave the house and drives his wife to do what he wants stranger in every way, then goes to his field and not return until the alien remains in the house. And these sometimes it is up to three days going to bed with the wife of the unfortunate ... After taking his pleasure the merchant mounts his horse and resumed his way. Then husband and wife begin to ridicule and derision. "
Finally, in the province of Zardandan, another strange custom:
" When a woman gave birth, wash and wrap in tissue il neonato, ed il marito si mette a letto al posto della moglie tenendo il bambino con sé e per avere cura di lui rimane a letto per quaranta giorni alzandosi solo se è necessario. Tutti gli amici e i parenti vengono a trovarlo, restano con lui e gli fanno festa. I mariti fanno così perché dicono che la donna ha molto faticato a portare il bambino nel ventre e non deve più faticare per quaranta giorni. Sicché la donna che ha partorito si alza da letto, fa tutte le faccende di casa e serve il suo signore a letto."
