Il romanzo, proprio per le sue implicazioni realistiche, così lontane dall'esperienza di vita dei ragazzi lettori di oggi, può essere proposto fino a tutta l'età della scuola media - anzi si presta bene a una lettura storico critica proprio in quest'età - seguendo in ciò l'indicazione implicita già nella prima edizione: gli Editori Riuniti lo avevano infatti inserito nella Biblioteca Giovani, nella quale erano presenti romanzi sulla Resistenza e addirittura opere di psicologia per adolescenti.

Non potrà che aiutare a ricordare e molto anche ad adoperarsi affinché mai più un giorno di vacanza divenga per un bambino di otto anni il giorno buio "che cambia la vita".
