The pioneer in the postwar period, but then never chose to publish in volume: troppo realista e deamicisiana la la storia? Troppo dichiarato l'intento morale? Troppo assenti l'arguzia e l'ironia che più tardi avrebbero contraddistinto l'opera rodariana? Non lo sappiamo. Ma possiamo leggere con interesse e attenzione gli eventi dei piccoli vagabondi, protagonisti di una storia fondata su elementi di vita vera e vissuta di quegli anni. Il vagabondaggio e la mendicità infantile erano ancora ben presenti in alcune realtà del nostro Paese. “Cari ragazzi, la differenza fra questa storia e un grande romanzo di avventure sta nel fatto che qui tutto è vero, dalla prima parola all’ultima” spiega ai suoi lettori lo stesso Rodari.

Chi non avesse mai letto il libro e voglia farlo ora può trovarlo nell'edizione Einaudi Ragazzi, purtroppo senza i due saggi in appendice e con l'indicazione di lettura "bambini", che ci pare un po' restrittiva e non proprio adeguata. Il romanzo, proprio per le sue implicazioni realistiche, così lontane dall'esperienza di vita dei ragazzi lettori di oggi, può essere proposto fino a tutta l'età della scuola media - anzi si presta bene a una lettura storico critica proprio in quest'età - seguendo in ciò l'indicazione implicita già nella prima edizione: gli Editori Riuniti lo avevano infatti inserito nella Biblioteca Giovani, nella quale erano presenti romanzi sulla Resistenza e addirittura opere di psicologia per adolescenti.
